Somewhere, Over Miss Rainbow by Lykaios-Avery Somewhere, Over Miss Rainbow by Lykaios-Avery
Cloudsale flies
There's the team that she dreams of
As she soars through the sky.

-----

This is the second Rainbow Dash I've made. I made a few little changes to the back legs, neck and nose. I re-drafted the pattern for the hair on top of Rainbow's head, too. Made it more show-accurate than the last one. Like the previous Rainbow, her mane can be worn on either side of her head.

She's a commission for :iconaegwinn: . She's got a long journey ahead of her! First she has to fly down to the US to meet up with him, then they'll be flying back to France together (Fluttershy will be so jealous [French haute couture!] heck I'm jealous [Take me with you!]).

And the 20% cooler part? About 98% of the correspondence from my half (comprised of many, many notes and emails) was conducted in French (and I'm such a nerd for loving it as much as I did)!

This looks really good in profile view, but I wonder how it is from the other angles (front, back, 3/4 views, and overhead)? I've just spent all I am going to for awhile on ponies on their comics and WeLoveFine's Black Friday sale, but if I was interested in commissioning you, I'd want to see more pictures first. Sometimes plushies look fantastic from the side (yours looks like RD just walked right out of the show :D ) but from the front they're as flat as a pancake or something. I did check your gallery but didn't find any. (I realize I just used "but" in every sentence, b u t ... considering how late it is here, it's amazing I wrote any coherent thoughts. :dummy:)

This is the closest I've got to a 3/4 view in this gallery [link] .

I think I've got some other photos on my computer of this same Rainbow. I suppose I could compile a photo montage, or whatever they're called, of the various angles.

Admittedly, the front view isn't exactly as it appears in the show [link] . Her head is far from being 'flat as a pancake' (it's more like a ball), but her eyes don't look perfectly forward like they do in the show, considering her head shape. If I wanted her eyes to be front facing, I'd have to change her head shape and stick them on the front of her face (like a human) but the profile view would look terrible. I've contemplated moving the eyes forward to make them more visible from the front, but it'd make her eye look like they're positioned too far forward from the profile view. However, it doesn't mean that her eyes look terrible from the front. They're easily visible, kind of like this [link] .

Also, her wings don't stick out to the side like this [link] when looked at from a front view. Not unless you twist her wings to do so (once again considering the position of wings in the profile view).

While I am always doing pattern tweaks to bring it closer to show accuracy, I do hope that you understand that 2D TV animation will look different from a 3D plush. And while 2D can be drawn to look good from every angle, the accuracy cannot always be achieved in a 3D model from all angles without repositioning/reposing parts, or sacrificing accuracy in another angle.

I'm glad you like her though (well, I think you like her).

Of course, I understand the whole 2D vs 3D issue. Whatever position you pose her in, as long as it looks proportionally accurate from other angles, it's good. In the image you linked, she's in a completely different position. Sitting with her wings out. If you found an image of her in the pose you have here but facing the camera (I know I've seen that in the show), I think the only real differences would be in the head.

And of course I some parts like the head just don't translate to 3D perfectly owing to the art style of the show. It's just that with the quality of some of the artists out there, I've seen many plushies which look near or absolutely perfect in profile, but if there's no other angle available, then I can't tell which is best, and that just drives me, personally, a bit nutty. :XD:

I don't believe this of you, but sometimes I think that artists are trying to hide the poor quality of their work by only showing it from one angle. I've actually seen a few that were quite flat. I wouldn't have known it though if the artist hadn't made one of those "photo montages" (I'm not sure what they're called either). Most 3D art (plushies and statues included) is meant to be taken in from all angles. Obviously this forum isn't completely suited to that.

I do like her! :D I just like to test how artists handle criticism sometimes before clicking the Love. =P

(A quick thought, if that Derpy was a little thinner near the part of the head that makes up the front edge of the eyes (lower forehead above the nose), the eyes would be drawn a little inward and would more forward looking without sacrificing the profile much if at all. I say this not as a plushie maker, as I am not one, but just as someone with a good sense of space.)

That's the thing. I didn't spend a lot of time searching for photos, but I couldn't find any on the fan wiki of her with open wings that weren't sticking out sideways [link] [link] .

I choose the side profile because I believe it to be the best angle to show off most of the pony in one shot. Unfortunately it leads to speculations that the rest of it looks terrible, or (in Rainbow's case) that I've forgotten one of the colours on the top of her head. I'd like to think that the fact that I managed to get it as accurate a I did from the side would imply that the rest of it would be ok, but I suppose there's always what people say about assuming...

But like I said earlier, I'm still doing pattern tweaks with each new pony. And I'm looking into something called needle sculpting to shape the bridge of the nose up to the forehead to pull the eyes forward. I've been adamant about not shifting the eye embroidery because of this [link] . This person's Pinkie looks great from the front view, but from a profile view (in particular the bottom right photo) her eyes are just too far forward for my liking when compared to the reference photos I use [link] . And I always figured that people would position their ponies on shelves to be seen with a profile view, or a 3/4 view. I even make all my manes flippable so the ponies can be placed facing either direction. Though I've been considering shifting the eye embroidery forward to make it look better from the front because I seem to be one of the very few who notices/cares if eyes look like they're too far forward in a profile view.

I've only made 8 ponies (4 big, 4 small) over the course of 5 months (even thought my account is over year old, I never used it for 8 months), and I'm not a profession at sewing, plush making or pattern drafting (I haven't even been alive for as long as some people on here have been sewing). I'd like to think that I'm doing pretty well for now, and that I can only get better from here on out.
